Pony.ai Reveals New Autonomous Truck with Plans for European Market Entry

Chinese self-driving technology company Pony.ai on Monday unveiled its latest autonomous, fully-electric heavy goods vehicle and announced plans to expand into Europe. The company is in discussions with European governments and potential customers to begin road tests on the continent, signaling a significant step in its international growth strategy.
New Model and Expansion Timeline
The new truck, jointly developed with state-owned Chinese automaker GAC, was revealed at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover, Germany. According to Pony.ai, the vehicle is designed for Level 4 autonomy, meaning it can operate without a human driver under specific conditions and within designated zones.
The company stated that volume production of the new model is scheduled to begin later this year. Pony.ai plans to launch its robotruck division in European and Middle Eastern markets over the next two years.
Market Strategy and Hurdles
Pony.ai is targeting regions where logistics operations are impacted by high labor costs and driver shortages. "We are looking at markets where labour costs are expensive or the labour shortage is severe... which definitely makes Europe an important market for robotic trucks," said He Xing, Pony.ai's vice president in charge of the robotruck business.
AdHowever, the company faces a complex regulatory landscape, as only a handful of European nations have established rules permitting self-driving vehicle tests. To address this, Pony.ai confirmed it has "approached several ports and some (European) governments on the topic" of testing.
Competitive Landscape
The move positions Pony.ai among a growing number of Chinese vehicle and technology firms targeting Europe's commercial transport sector. Other companies, including BYD, Geely's Farizon unit, and Sany, have either launched or are preparing to sell electric trucks in the region.
Pony.ai, which already operates several hundred Level 4 trucks in China, is also pursuing other autonomous vehicle applications abroad. The company is currently running robotaxi tests in several European cities, including Zagreb, Croatia.
