Norfolk Southern Warns of 250-Basis-Point Hit to Q3 Operating Ratio from Fuel Costs

Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC) expects persistently high fuel prices to create a significant headwind for its third-quarter results, even as the company successfully captures more freight business from the trucking industry. Executives speaking at a Morgan Stanley conference on Tuesday warned that the financial impact is now greater than previously anticipated.
Fuel Costs Pressure Operating Ratio
Chief Financial Officer Jason Zampi told investors that continued increases in fuel prices represent a 250-basis-point headwind to the company's operating ratio compared with its expectations just two months ago. The operating ratio is a key measure of a railroad's efficiency, and a higher ratio indicates lower profitability.
Zampi noted that fuel prices, once expected to peak in May, have continued to climb. As a result, Norfolk Southern projects its third-quarter performance will be slightly worse than normal seasonal trends.
Market Share Gains Continue
AdDespite the pressure on margins, the company is seeing continued success in winning business from competitors. Executives highlighted incremental freight market share gains from trucks and identified the upcoming intermodal contract bidding season next year as the next major opportunity to shift more freight from highways to rail.
Zampi also commented on broader economic factors, stating that customers are "mostly past" uncertainty related to tariffs. He described the tariffs as a largely one-time event that no longer has a significant ongoing influence on key markets like automotive. The conflict in the Middle East, however, remains a more pressing concern due to its direct impact on fuel prices and global shipping routes.
Merger Update
Regarding the company's proposed merger with Union Pacific, executives noted that the regulatory review process is proceeding largely in line with expectations. They added that the current schedule for the review provides greater visibility into the path forward.
