The exact cause remains unconfirmed, but Nepal's foreign minister noted initial reports suggested an earthquake may have triggered an avalanche. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a 4.4 magnitude quake in the area shortly before the event.
AdRescue efforts are underway but have been hampered by the terrain, with helicopters unable to land in the affected areas. Chinese authorities have deployed over 500 rescuers to the Gyirong crossing. Experts have warned of a potential second flood, citing a blockage that remains lodged upstream on the border river.
Regional Context
The disaster has prompted a regional response, with flood alerts issued for the populous northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which lie downstream. The Bhote Koshi river, where the flood occurred, flows from Tibet through Nepal and eventually into India's Gandak river.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for "all-out" search and rescue efforts, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said New Delhi is prepared to provide all possible humanitarian assistance. This event follows a similar flood on the Bhote Koshi last year that killed nine people and disrupted trade for months after washing away a key bridge.
