Mizuho Says Buy Dip in EDA Stocks, Citing Misplaced AI Fears

A recent selloff in electronic design automation (EDA) stocks represents a buying opportunity, according to Mizuho. The firm argues that fears over a new Chinese AI model are overblown and misunderstand its role in the chip design industry.
Analyst Recommends Buying the Dip
Mizuho recommended that investors buy the recent dip in shares of Synopsys (SNPS) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS). The guidance follows a sharp 8-10% selloff in both stocks last Friday, which the firm attributed to market concerns about potential competition from open-source AI chip design models from China.
In a note to clients, Mizuho TMT Sector Specialist Jordan Klein stated the firm believes "this risk is way overblown" and reiterated its bullish stance on the EDA sector.
Kimi K3 Seen as a Catalyst, Not a Threat
The market reaction was reportedly linked to the release of Moonshot's Kimi K3 model. However, Mizuho's analysis suggests the model reinforces the investment case for EDA software rather than threatening it. According to the firm, Kimi K3 operates as a "general-purpose agent" that orchestrates existing open-source EDA tools, not as a replacement for the core proprietary software.
AdMizuho's note explained that foundation models "cannot substitute for deterministic, physically accurate solvers." The firm's view is that autonomous agents will therefore drive incremental usage of established EDA tools rather than displacing them.
The 'Agentic AI Engineer' Thesis
This development supports what Mizuho calls its "agentic AI engineer thesis." The firm posits that agentic AI can address the structural talent gap in the semiconductor design industry, potentially expanding the EDA total addressable market (TAM).
By moving beyond selling software tools to capturing a share of engineering labor value, Mizuho believes this trend could potentially triple the core EDA market. The firm also noted that the availability of lower-cost open-source models could accelerate, not slow, capital expenditure from leading AI companies seeking to maintain their competitive edge.
