Mitchells & Butlers Shares Slide as Heatwave Stalls Q3 Sales Growth

Shares in Mitchells & Butlers PLC (LSE:MAB) fell sharply on Tuesday after the pub and restaurant operator reported that sales growth stalled in its third quarter, a performance the company linked to the recent European heatwave.
Trading Update Disappoints
In a scheduled trading update for the 42 weeks ended July 18, 2026, Mitchells & Butlers announced that like-for-like (LFL) sales were flat during the third quarter. This represents a significant deceleration from the 4.5% LFL sales growth the company reported in its first quarter, which was boosted by strong holiday trading.
The company identified the hot weather as the primary factor for the slowdown, stating it dampened customer footfall and appetite at its food-focused brands. Venues such as Toby Carvery and Miller & Carter, known for hearty sit-down meals, were particularly affected. Despite the quarterly performance, year-to-date LFL sales for the 42-week period remained positive at 2.2%.

Investors reacted to the loss of momentum, sending the company's stock down by 4.5% to 262.5 pence in morning trading. The shares, which opened at 274.5p, hit a low of 251.5p, erasing recent gains and moving the stock closer to the middle of its 52-week range of 223.5p to 308p.
The sell-off occurred amid a cautious backdrop for UK consumer-facing stocks. The broader FTSE 100 index was trading lower, weighed down by rising government bond yields and climbing oil prices, with Brent crude approaching $98 a barrel.
