MicroStrategy Stock Plunges 76% in a Year, Sharply Underperforming Bitcoin

MicroStrategy (MSTR) shares have plunged 75.6% over the past year, starkly underperforming Bitcoin and highlighting the amplified risks associated with the software company's leveraged crypto strategy. While the stock has been battered, some Wall Street analysts see a potential rebound of over 200%, contingent on a significant recovery in the digital asset market.
Amplified Volatility Hits Shares
The performance gap between MicroStrategy and its core asset has been significant. While Bitcoin has declined approximately 49% from its all-time high to trade above $64,000, MicroStrategy's stock has suffered a much steeper loss over the last 12 months, according to data from Investing.com.
This divergence is a direct result of the company's business model, which functions as a leveraged bet on Bitcoin. The stock carries a beta of 3.55, indicating it is substantially more volatile than the broader market. Its recent 30-day realized volatility was measured at 58.5%, underscoring the magnified price swings investors face compared to holding Bitcoin directly.
Underwater Holdings and Corporate Risks
Unlike a direct investment in Bitcoin, holding MSTR stock exposes investors to company-specific operational and financial risks. The company's balance sheet is under pressure, as it holds approximately 844,000 Bitcoin at an average cost basis of $75,476 per coin—well above current market prices.
AdThis unrealized loss was reflected in the company's Q2 2026 earnings, when it reported a net loss of $24.45 per share, driven by an $8.3 billion digital asset impairment charge. To manage its obligations, MicroStrategy has engaged in at-the-market equity sales, a move that raises cash but also dilutes the value for existing shareholders.
Analysts See Steep Upside Despite Risks
Despite the stock's dramatic underperformance, some market analysts maintain a bullish long-term outlook. The mean analyst price target for MSTR stands at $257.50, which suggests a potential upside of 212.6% from its recent price of $96.63.
However, this optimism has been tempered by the crypto market's downturn. Several firms recently lowered their targets, with B.Riley reducing its forecast to $155 and Cantor Fitzgerald setting a new target of $186 on August 2, 2026. This presents a high-risk, high-reward scenario for investors, where any potential gains are heavily dependent on both a sustained Bitcoin rally and management's ability to navigate its financial obligations.
