Mazagon Dock Shares Tumble After Q2 Profit Halves, Misses Estimates

Shares of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MAZG) plunged in trading after the state-owned defense company reported a dramatic drop in second-quarter earnings that fell significantly short of market expectations, fueling investor concerns over project execution and profitability.
Disappointing Q2 Results Trigger Sell-Off
The company announced a standalone net profit of ₹3.40 billion (Rs 340.20 crore) for the second quarter, a decline of approximately 52% from the same period last year. This result was well below the consensus analyst estimate of around ₹9.99 billion.
Revenue also saw a significant contraction, falling nearly 24% year-over-year to ₹22.28 billion from ₹29.29 billion. The consolidated financial picture was similarly weak, with net profit attributable to owners falling over 54% to ₹3.44 billion and revenue declining by about 16.5% to ₹24.46 billion. The steep declines point to significant headwinds in the company's operational performance.
Market Reaction and Technical Pressure
The earnings miss sparked a sharp negative reaction in the market. The stock fell 7.3% to close at ₹1,742.55 after a volatile session that saw the share price swing nearly 14% from its daily high of ₹1,935 to its low of ₹1,691.10. The sell-off marked the seventh consecutive session of declines for the stock, which is now trading at its lowest level in over a year.
AdMeasures announced by the board, including an interim dividend of ₹5 per share and an increase in authorized share capital, provided little support against the scale of the negative earnings surprise. The stock's performance came as India's broader Sensex index showed only a modest recovery.
Analyst Caution Validated
Today's sharp decline appears to validate a previous cautious outlook from HSBC, which had initiated coverage on the stock with a "Reduce" rating and a price target of ₹1,860. The bank had flagged concerns over the company's rich valuation and potential execution risks.
With a massive earnings miss, a deteriorating technical trend, and prior analyst warnings, investors now appear to be reassessing the pace and profitability of Mazagon Dock's near-term project pipeline and order book.
