Kioxia Shares Tumble Over 9% Amid Pre-Earnings Caution in Chip Sector

Shares of Kioxia Holdings Corp. plunged 9.3% to ¥69,850 in recent trading as a wave of caution swept through the semiconductor sector ahead of crucial earnings reports from industry leaders.
Pre-Earnings Jitters
Investors are closely watching for quarterly results from chip bellwethers ASML and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) this week. These reports are widely seen as a key barometer for global technology demand, offering critical insights into the pace of AI-related capital spending and the outlook for the memory market through the second half of the year.
The cautious sentiment was reflected across the broader Japanese market, with the Nikkei 225 trading lower, led by declines in semiconductor and AI-related stocks. The move comes amid heightened volatility in global chip stocks as the market re-evaluates lofty valuations driven by the AI boom.
Analyst View and Valuation Concerns
A lingering bearish stance from Bernstein also contributed to the negative sentiment around Kioxia. The brokerage last month maintained its Sell rating on the stock with a price target of ¥40,000, a notable contrast to the generally bullish consensus among analysts.
AdBernstein acknowledged Kioxia's strong near-term momentum, fueled by robust NAND pricing and AI demand. However, the firm argued that investors are pricing in peak-cycle earnings as if they are sustainable long-term, a view it challenges.
Kioxia in Context
Today's sharp decline was not attributed to any specific company news but rather a combination of sector-wide profit-taking and Kioxia's high-beta profile. The stock has retreated significantly from its 52-week high of ¥112,700.
Despite the pullback, shares remain substantially above their 52-week low of ¥2,270, highlighting the extraordinary rally the memory chipmaker has staged since its public listing in December 2024.
