JetBlue Stock Rallies as Strong Guidance Outweighs Q3 Earnings Miss

JetBlue Airways (JBLU) stock surged in pre-market trading on Tuesday after the company's forward guidance provided a more optimistic outlook than investors had feared, triggering a relief rally from a recent record low.
Upbeat Forecast Drives Rebound
The primary catalyst for the stock's 5.5% pre-open gain was the airline's forecast, released after Monday's market close. Management guided for fourth-quarter revenue per available seat mile (RASM) to grow 18% to 22% year-over-year. The company also anticipates 1 to 2 percentage points of operating margin expansion in the same period.
In the earnings release, CEO Joanna Geraghty noted that "resilient demand and strong yields drove revenue well ahead of our initial expectations." Looking further ahead, CFO Ursula Hurley expressed confidence in the company's liquidity and its ability to achieve at least $1 in earnings per share and positive free cash flow in 2028.
Context: A Relief Rally After a Steep Decline
Tuesday's rally follows a period of intense selling pressure for JetBlue. The stock had fallen roughly 45% in the month leading up to the report and hit a record intraday low of $2.16 during Monday's session. The market had priced in significant distress following several negative developments:
Ad- Reports that the airline's senior creditors had hired a restructuring adviser and law firm.
- Broader sector headwinds after a peer airline's earnings miss highlighted rising fuel-cost pressures.
- Multiple Wall Street analysts cutting their price targets on the stock.
Given the deeply negative sentiment, the strong guidance was enough to spark a rebound as investors recalibrated their expectations for the carrier's future performance.
Third-Quarter Performance
While the outlook was strong, JetBlue's third-quarter results came in slightly below consensus estimates. The carrier reported an adjusted loss of $0.60 per share on revenue of $2.81 billion. Investors and analysts will be looking for more details on the company's turnaround strategy during an earnings conference call scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET.
