Background

The Japanese yen resumed its slide against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, approaching the psychologically important 160 level as the impact of a recent, coordinated currency intervention continues to diminish. The currency has now erased nearly half of the gains achieved after authorities stepped in to pull it from a multi-decade low.

Intervention Impact Fades

The yen traded at 159.1 to the dollar on Tuesday after falling 0.9% in the previous session, according to Investing.com. This level is a significant retreat from the three-month high of 155.20 reached after a rare joint purchase of the currency by U.S. and Japanese authorities in late July.

That intervention was triggered after the yen tumbled to a 40-year low of 163.99 against the dollar. With the yen's rebound proving short-lived, foreign exchange traders are now watching for signs of another potential intervention by monetary authorities.

Speculators Slash Bearish Bets

Despite the yen's renewed weakness, data from U.S. regulators shows that speculative traders have recently made a historic move to reduce their bearish positions. For the week ending August 4, net short positions on the yen were cut by $8.665 billion, bringing the total down to $3.604 billion.

This represents the largest reduction in short bets in over 12 years. Analysts cited in the source material expect that speculators may begin rebuilding these short positions, although the potential for an accelerated tightening of monetary policy by Japan remains a key risk factor for bears.

RBA Holds Rates Steady

In other currency market news, the Australian dollar held near an eight-week high after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) kept its policy rate unchanged, a move that was widely anticipated by markets.

  • The RBA held its cash rate steady at 4.35%.
  • The central bank warned that further interest rate hikes may still be necessary to combat inflation driven by rising energy costs.
  • The RBA has raised rates by a cumulative 75 basis points since February.

The Australian dollar was stable at approximately $0.7054 following the announcement.
