Instacart Stock Falls on Concerns Over Potential DoorDash-Costco Partnership

Shares of Instacart parent Maplebear (NASDAQ: CART) fell more than 3% in morning trading, extending recent losses after a research note highlighted a potential threat to one of the company's key partnerships. The decline was primarily driven by concerns that competitor DoorDash is moving closer to a delivery integration with Costco.
Costco Partnership at Risk
According to a note from Edgewater Research, signs are emerging that a partnership between DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) and Costco (NASDAQ: COST) is "becoming more probable." Such a deal would create a significant near-term risk for Instacart, which currently holds a quasi-exclusive delivery arrangement with the warehouse retailer in the United States.
Edgewater also noted that Costco is expected to shift to a members-only model for all online delivery. While the research firm said this change presents an "additional challenge" for Instacart, it also stated that a key benefit—a $10 credit on Instacart orders over $150 for Costco Executive Members—is expected to remain exclusive to the platform.
Broader Competitive Pressures
The potential Costco deal is the latest in a series of headwinds facing the grocery delivery company. In late August, Rosenblatt initiated coverage on Instacart with a Neutral rating, arguing that its leadership position was beginning to soften amid a more competitive landscape.
AdThis sentiment, combined with what the source material described as divided Wall Street opinion and modestly trimmed consensus earnings estimates, has created a challenging environment for the stock. The absence of a near-term positive catalyst and a weaker macroeconomic tone have contributed to the shares losing roughly 6% over the past week.
Market Impact
In morning trading, Instacart's stock fell 3.5% to $47.76 per share. The price is now trading meaningfully below its 52-week high of $52.68, though it remains well above the 52-week low of $32.73.
Despite the immediate market reaction, Edgewater Research characterized the potential DoorDash-Costco deal as a "near-term headline risk." The firm stated that while it could moderately affect near-term gross transaction value growth, the development does little to alter its positive long-term fundamental outlook for Instacart.
