Indian FMCG Firms Face Margin Pressure as Input Costs Outpace Price Hikes

Summary
India's consumer goods companies are expected to report shrinking first-quarter profit margins as rising raw material costs, driven by geopolitical tensions, have outpaced the benefits of price increases and strong consumer demand.
India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies are expected to report a squeeze on first-quarter profit margins, as surging input costs outweigh the benefits of resilient consumer demand and recent price hikes, according to multiple brokerage reports.
Sales Hold Firm, But Margins Shrink
Brokerages anticipate strong sales growth for the sector, supported by factors including an extended summer, improving rural consumption, and a trend toward premium products. Systematix noted an outlook for approximately 12% revenue growth across top consumer staples companies, driven by roughly 7% volume growth and 5% from pricing actions.
However, these price increases and pack-size reductions have not been sufficient to fully offset the spike in raw material costs. Key inputs like palm oil and crude-linked packaging materials have become more expensive since a conflict in the Middle East began, pressuring margins as companies sell through higher-cost inventory.
Analyst Outlook and Market Reaction
Several financial firms, including Investec and CLSA, forecast a sequential contraction in gross margins for the sector. While firms like Jefferies expect more price hikes to follow, most analysts see profitability under pressure in the near term. There is an expectation that margins could improve in the second half of the fiscal year if commodity costs stabilize at lower levels.
AdReflecting these headwinds, the Nifty FMCG index has underperformed the broader market. The index has fallen 11.82% so far in 2026, a steeper decline than the benchmark Nifty 50's 7.43% drop.
What to Watch
As the earnings season kicks off with Nestle India, investors will be closely monitoring management commentary for insights on several key areas:
- The outlook for rural demand and the impact of the monsoon.
- The trajectory of input-cost inflation.
- The effectiveness of pricing strategies and their impact on sales volumes.
Ahead of the results, brokerages have highlighted Marico and Godrej Consumer Products as frequently preferred stocks in the sector.
