Background

Indian equity markets ended Tuesday's session with significant losses, as benchmark indices fell more than 1% amid broad-based selling pressure. The NSE Nifty 50 index declined 1.19% to close at a new three-month low, while the BSE Sensex 30 shed 1.04%, according to closing market data.

Sector Divergence Defines Trade

The market downturn was led by heavy losses in the Capital Goods, Real Estate, and Power sectors. Market breadth was decidedly negative, indicating widespread bearish sentiment. On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), 2,119 stocks fell while only 500 advanced.

In a notable divergence, major technology stocks bucked the negative trend. Top performers on the Nifty 50 included:

  • HCL Technologies Ltd: +4.47%
  • Infosys Ltd: +3.70%
  • Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.: +2.79%

Conversely, the day's worst performers highlighted the pressure on other sectors. Laggards included Bharat Electronics Ltd, which fell 4.79%, Shriram Finance Ltd., down 4.43%, and Adani Enterprises Ltd, which lost 4.18%.

Volatility Spikes and Rupee Weakens

Investor uncertainty appeared to be on the rise, as reflected by the India VIX, a key gauge of market volatility. The index jumped 9.42% to 13.44, reaching a new one-month high.

In the currency markets, the Indian Rupee weakened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/INR pair rising 0.17% to 96.00. Meanwhile, commodity markets saw Brent crude oil for November delivery gain 1.45% to trade at $107.21 a barrel.
