Harley-Davidson Q2 Profit Declines on Higher Costs, But Annual Sales Forecast Raised

Harley-Davidson, Inc. (HOG) reported a decline in second-quarter profit and revenue, as the iconic motorcycle manufacturer grappled with rising raw material costs and an unfavorable product mix. Despite the weaker-than-expected quarterly results, the company raised its annual sales forecast, signaling confidence in its strategic turnaround plan and underlying consumer demand.
Quarterly Performance Under Pressure
The Milwaukee-based company announced that its financial performance was impacted by several headwinds in the second quarter. The results reflect the ongoing cost pressures affecting many manufacturers.
- Net Income: Dropped to $80 million, or 75 cents per share, from $108 million, or 88 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.
- Total Revenue: Fell by 6% year-over-year to $1.23 billion.
- Gross Margin: Contracted to 27.5% from 28.6% a year earlier. The company attributed the decline to higher raw material costs, an unfavorable product mix, and foreign exchange impacts.
Updated Outlook and Strategic Focus
AdDespite the quarterly downturn, Harley-Davidson offered a more optimistic view for the remainder of the year. The company upgraded its guidance for global motorcycle retail sales to a range of 133,500 to 138,500 units, an increase from its previous forecast of 130,000 to 135,000 units.
The improved outlook comes as the company continues to execute its "Back to the Bricks" turnaround strategy. The plan, led by CEO Artie Starrs, aims to attract a younger demographic by reintroducing iconic models and expanding its lineup with lighter, more affordable bikes, some with entry prices around the $10,000 mark.
Market Reaction
Following the earnings release, shares of Harley-Davidson fell approximately 1% in premarket trading. The initial investor reaction suggests a cautious weighing of the current profitability challenges against the company's more positive full-year sales forecast.
