Background

Guggenheim analyst Yatin Suneja has designated Surrozen Inc. (NASDAQ:SRZN) as a top pick in the biotechnology sector, pointing to a key regulatory milestone for the company's experimental treatment for eye diseases. The positive outlook is tied to Surrozen's submission of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application that is set to secure critical funding for its clinical development pipeline.

Regulatory Filing Unlocks Financing

Surrozen announced it has submitted an IND application for SZN-8141, a bispecific therapy designed to treat diabetic macular edema. According to Guggenheim, the successful clearance of this application is a crucial catalyst, as it will trigger the release of the second tranche of a 2025 financing round, providing the company with $98.4 million.

This capital infusion is part of a larger $175 million financing agreement. The funds are earmarked to support Surrozen's operations through two key clinical studies: the Phase Ib/IIa DUET study for SZN-8141 and a Phase I safety and tolerability study for another candidate, SZN-8143.

Clinical Timeline and Sector-Wide Catalyst

Guggenheim anticipates a smooth IND clearance process for SZN-8141 over the next 30 days, according to the analyst note. This would keep Surrozen on track to initiate its DUET study in patients with diabetic macular edema by the end of 2026, with initial data from the first phase expected thereafter.

Investors are also watching for a potentially significant event for the broader ophthalmology sector. Guggenheim highlighted the upcoming presentation of Merck’s BRUNELLO study results on October 10, 2026. A positive readout, demonstrating statistical significance against the current standard of care (anti-VEGFs), could validate new mechanisms of action for treating diabetic eye diseases and have a ripple effect across the industry.
