Gold Prices Decline as Mideast Tensions Spur Inflation Fears

Summary

Gold fell on Monday as a spike in oil prices, driven by renewed U.S.-Iran strikes, fueled concerns about a new inflation shock that could keep Federal Reserve interest rates elevated.

Background

Gold prices retreated on Monday as escalating military tensions in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher, stoking investor concerns that a new wave of inflation could force the Federal Reserve to maintain its hawkish monetary policy.

By 21:00 ET (01:00 GMT), spot gold (XAU/USD) had fallen 1.19% to $4,072.06 an ounce, while gold futures for August delivery were down 0.81% at $4,080.22 an ounce. The decline extended last week's losses, which saw the precious metal shed 1.3%, according to data from Investing.com.

Oil Spike Renews Hawkish Fed Bets

The weekend saw a flare-up in the Middle East conflict, with the U.S. conducting another round of strikes on Iranian targets. The action followed an attack on a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global energy shipments.

In response, oil prices jumped roughly 3% on fears of potential supply disruptions. This surge in energy costs has revived concerns about a broader inflation shock, leading markets to price in the possibility that the Federal Reserve will need to keep interest rates higher for longer. Higher interest rates increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like gold, diminishing its appeal.

Focus Turns to CPI and Fed Testimony

Investors are now looking ahead to key U.S. economic data and central bank commentary for further direction. Tuesday's consumer price index (CPI) report and upcoming congressional testimony from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh are expected to provide fresh clues on the interest-rate outlook.

Minutes from the Fed's June meeting already indicated that several policymakers saw a case for raising rates and expressed significant concern over persistent inflation. The central bank's next policy meeting is scheduled for July 28-29.

Analyst Outlook

According to Tony Sycamore, a market analyst at IG, gold's trajectory remains highly sensitive to both geopolitical events and U.S. inflation data. He noted several key technical levels for the precious metal:

  • Gold found support near the psychologically important $4,000 level last week.
  • A sustained break above the $4,200-$4,220 range would be needed to strengthen the case for a broader recovery.

Sycamore warned that a stronger-than-expected CPI reading could reinforce expectations for another Fed rate hike and boost the U.S. dollar, adding further pressure on bullion. Conversely, a softer inflation print could help gold stabilize.
