Freeport-McMoRan Stock Surges Over 7% as Copper Hits New All-Time High

Shares of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX) surged more than 7% in morning trading, significantly outperforming a declining broader market as copper prices reached a new historic peak.
Record Copper Prices Drive Rally
The primary catalyst for the stock's advance was the price of copper itself. LME three-month copper futures climbed to a new all-time high of $14,694 per ton, surpassing a record set just one day prior. According to a report from Investing.com, the price surge is underpinned by several key factors:
- Critically Low Inventories: Warehouse stockpiles on the London Metal Exchange (LME) have fallen by approximately 40% since late May.
- Speculative Buying: Traders are actively buying into the commodity's upward momentum.
- Anticipated US Tariffs: Persistent market expectations that the U.S. will impose tariffs on refined copper imports have reportedly led to a significant flow of the metal into American warehouses, tightening supply in other global markets.
High Leverage to Commodity Prices
AdFreeport-McMoRan, as one of the world's largest publicly traded copper producers, has significant earnings leverage to the price of the metal. The company's own sensitivity analysis indicates that for every 10-cent increase in the average realized price of copper, its annual EBITDA grows by approximately $390 million. The current record-high price environment therefore represents a substantial potential uplift to the company's full-year earnings.
Market and Sector Context
FCX's rally stood in stark contrast to the broader market sentiment, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average both trading in negative territory. The move was not isolated to Freeport-McMoRan, as peer Southern Copper (SCCO) also saw strong gains, confirming a sector-wide response to the commodity's strength.
The stock's performance was also supported by a consensus of bullish analyst sentiment, with major financial institutions including Barclays, JP Morgan, and Bank of America holding buy-equivalent ratings. With this gain, FCX's stock is now up 44% year-to-date and is trading near its 52-week high.
