Fitch Revises Moody's Outlook to Positive on Strong Cash Flow, Analytics Growth

Fitch Ratings has revised its outlook for Moody’s Corporation (NYSE:MCO) to Positive from Stable, signaling potential for a future credit rating upgrade. The agency affirmed Moody's Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'BBB+' and its Short-Term IDR at 'F1'.
Rationale for the Revision
The outlook change is underpinned by Moody's strong market position as a leading global credit rating agency and its successful business diversification, according to Fitch. The ratings agency highlighted Moody's increased scale, sustained free cash flow generation, and consistent financial policies as key drivers.
A significant factor in the revision is the growth of the Moody's Analytics segment, which provides substantial recurring revenue and now accounts for more than 40% of the company's total revenue. This diversification helps mitigate the cyclicality of the ratings business and supports the overall credit profile.
Financial Health and Projections
Fitch noted Moody's robust financial position and low-leverage profile. Key metrics supporting the rating action include:
Ad- EBITDA leverage: Ended 2025 at a conservative 1.7x.
- Liquidity: The company maintains a strong liquidity position with over $2 billion of cash on its balance sheet, an undrawn revolver, and a $1 billion commercial paper program.
- Profitability: Fitch expects Moody's to sustain EBITDA margins above 50% in the coming years, citing its highly profitable, cash-generative business model with low capital intensity.
Fitch anticipates that Moody's will continue to return significant capital to shareholders via dividends and share repurchases while maintaining stable credit metrics, with EBITDA leverage expected to remain below 2.0x.
Path to an Upgrade
A future upgrade of Moody's rating is possible if the company continues to expand its business while maintaining its strong margin and free cash flow profile, Fitch stated. The agency's base case assumes Moody's 2026 results will align with management's expectations, with revenue growth tapering to lower single digits from 2027 onwards.
