Background

Firehawk Defense, a rocket motor startup with ties to a venture capital firm backed by Donald Trump Jr., announced it has reached a valuation of over $1.4 billion following a new financing round. The company aims to challenge legacy defense contractors by using a faster manufacturing process to address shortages in tactical munitions.

New Funding Details

The Dallas-based startup said on Wednesday that it raised $150 million in a round co-led by private equity firm Advent International and Kyle Bass’ Rochefort Asset Management. Previous investors in the company include 1789 Capital, a venture capital firm backed by Donald Trump Jr.

The new funding highlights a trend of private capital flowing into the defense sector, as investors seek to capitalize on opportunities to modernize and expand the production of key military hardware.

Challenging the Defense Establishment

Firehawk intends to disrupt the U.S. market for rocket propellant and artillery motors, which has long been dominated by prime contractors L3Harris and Northrop Grumman. The company stated it expects to become the largest domestic producer of artillery motors and the third-largest producer of rocket propellant by weight by the end of 2027.

Firehawk's key technological advantage is a continuous thermoplastic process that can mold propellant into solid fuel cores within hours, compared to the weeks-long process used by incumbent suppliers. The company is focusing on high-volume munitions under 13 inches in diameter, such as:

  • 155mm artillery base-bleed motors, which can extend the range of standard artillery shells by up to 30%.
  • Hydra-70 rockets, which are increasingly being paired with laser-guidance kits to serve as low-cost drone interceptors.

Production and Growth Plans

The capital infusion will be used to expand Firehawk's 320-acre Great Plains Arsenal in Lawton, Oklahoma, and an integration facility in Crawford, Mississippi. According to the company, the Oklahoma site is projected to achieve low-rate production by mid-2027 and scale to tens of thousands of motors per month by the end of that year.

Firehawk also announced plans to produce over 100,000 artillery motors in 2027 under a commercial agreement with General Dynamics. These initial sales will be directed to allied nations while the company completes a 12-to-18-month qualification process for the U.S. Army.
