Potential Market Impact

Large options expiries, particularly those with a high notional value at a single strike, can act as a "magnet" for the underlying spot currency price. This phenomenon, often referred to as pin risk, occurs as market participants with exposure to these options may trade in the spot market to hedge their positions as the expiration time approaches.

As a result, the spot price may gravitate toward the strike level and experience suppressed volatility in the hours leading up to the expiry, which is typically 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Once the options have expired, this pinning effect is removed, which can sometimes lead to a release of pent-up price momentum and increased volatility.
