Background

European airline stocks came under pressure on Monday as crude oil prices jumped, directly following an escalation in military action between the United States and Iran over the weekend. The geopolitical turmoil raises investor concerns about rising fuel costs, a critical operating expense for the aviation sector.

Market Impact

Shares of major European airline companies fell between 0.07% and 2% during Monday's trading session. The sell-off was a direct reaction to a sharp rise in energy prices, which threatens to erode airline profit margins.

Key commodity market movements included:

  • Brent crude, the international benchmark, rising $2.30, or 3.03%.
  • U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gaining $2.06, or 2.88%.

The market volatility was triggered by a series of U.S. military strikes against Iran. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported it had struck more than 300 targets over three nights, aiming to degrade Tehran's ability to target commercial shipping.

CENTCOM stated the military response came after forces from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container vessel transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The attack left a crew member missing and the ship disabled, according to the command.

Strait of Hormuz Standoff

The conflict has intensified the standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transit. Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority claimed passage was "currently not possible," a statement CENTCOM publicly refuted, insisting the strait "remains an international waterway."

Underscoring the severity of the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump told NBC's "Meet the Press" that a tentative deal with Tehran had collapsed just hours after it was reached. In a separate post on Truth Social, he warned that "1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran."
