Equity Positioning Remains Cautious Despite Strong Earnings Outlook, Deutsche Bank Finds

Summary

A new Deutsche Bank report shows investors remain cautiously positioned in equities, a stance that lags the firm's forecast for a significant earnings growth boom. Systematic strategies are adding exposure while discretionary investors pull back amid market headwinds.

Background

Equity investor positioning remains surprisingly cautious and does not fully reflect the strong earnings growth anticipated in the coming quarter, according to a new report from Deutsche Bank. The analysis highlights a significant divergence between systematic and discretionary strategies as markets navigate numerous headwinds.

Divergent Investor Stances

Deutsche Bank's note, published September 18, 2026, reveals a split in investor behavior. Systematic strategies, driven by subdued market volatility, have increased their equity exposure to 0.87 standard deviations, placing them in the 90th percentile of their historical range.

In stark contrast, discretionary investors have retreated to a nearly neutral stance of 0.06 standard deviations, or the 46th percentile. Broader sentiment surveys reinforce this cautious mood, plunging to the 5th percentile of their long-run average, according to the bank.

Positioning Lags Growth Outlook

Overall positioning in large-cap equities stands at a modest overweight of 0.35 standard deviations (65th percentile). Deutsche Bank's analysts state this level is consistent with year-over-year earnings growth of around 10%.

However, the report notes this positioning "falls well short" of the firm's expectations for an unfolding "growth boom." Deutsche Bank is forecasting a much stronger 30% growth in the third-quarter earnings season, which begins in less than a month.

Market Headwinds and Sector View

This investor caution persists even as equity markets have held within a tight range, weathering significant pressures. According to the report, these headwinds include sharply higher oil prices, rising interest rates, and escalating geopolitical and trade tensions.

An analysis of sector positioning shows a similarly defensive posture. While large-cap technology and energy are modestly overweight, most other sectors, including cyclicals and bond-like defensives, are underweight due to concerns over economic growth and the impact of higher rates.
