Background

U.S. stock futures were mixed in overnight trading as investors returned from the Labor Day holiday to face renewed concerns over inflation and the prospect of further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve.

Market Snapshot

As of 9:07 PM ET (01:07 GMT), futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average led the losses, pointing to a weaker open for the blue-chip index. The overnight moves followed a lower close on Friday, where the Dow fell 0.5%.

Fed Rate Hike Bets Increase

Investor sentiment shifted after a stronger-than-expected August employment report, released before the holiday weekend, showed U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs, exceeding economists' forecasts. The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%.

Following the report, futures markets are now pricing in a roughly 60% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate increase at the Fed's Sept. 15-16 meeting, up from 49% before the jobs data, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Underscoring the change in outlook, UBS on Monday revised its forecast to include two rate hikes in 2026, one in September and another in December, after previously expecting no changes this year.

Inflation Pressures Mount

Adding to economic headwinds, oil prices surged amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded around $97 a barrel on concerns over potential supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

Higher energy costs risk complicating the Federal Reserve's policy decisions by stoking inflation just as it assesses whether the economy is robust enough for tighter policy. Investors are now awaiting key inflation data later this week, with the producer price index due Thursday and the consumer price index on Friday, for further clues on the Fed's next move.
