Background

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) is reportedly exploring the launch of a free, ad-supported tier for its Disney+ streaming service, a move aimed at capturing a larger audience and competing more directly with the growing influence of platforms like YouTube.

Strategic Shift Under Consideration

According to a report from Business Insider, Disney executives have held internal discussions about offering a free version of the streaming platform. The proposal remains in an exploratory stage, with no final decisions made regarding its potential scope, timing, or the markets where it might be introduced.

A fully free tier would represent a significant strategic shift for Disney. The company currently offers paid subscription plans for Disney+ and Hulu, including lower-cost options that include advertisements, but has not yet entered the completely free streaming space.

Responding to Market Trends

The potential move is being considered as viewers increasingly migrate to free, ad-supported streaming television (FAST) services. The report cited Nielsen data showing these platforms accounted for 18.7% of U.S. television viewing in April 2026, a notable increase from 12.7% two years earlier.

This shift reflects a broader industry trend where consumers, facing rising subscription costs, are turning to free alternatives. A free Disney+ offering would position the company to compete more effectively with established players like YouTube, Tubi, and The Roku Channel for both viewers and advertising dollars.

Broader Streaming Initiatives

The consideration of a free tier is part of a wider push under Chief Executive Josh D’Amaro to strengthen Disney's streaming division. The company is also reportedly evaluating other initiatives to boost engagement, including short-form vertical video, micro-dramas, and podcasts.

Following the report, shares of Disney were little changed in premarket trading, suggesting investors may be taking a wait-and-see approach to the potential strategy.
