CuspAI Valued at $2.6 Billion After $450 Million Raise for AI Materials Discovery

British startup CuspAI announced on Monday it has raised $450 million in a Series B funding round, bringing its valuation to $2.6 billion. The company is developing an artificial intelligence platform to accelerate the discovery of new materials critical for high-tech industries.
High-Profile Backing
The financing round was led by venture capital firms Kleiner Perkins and NEA. According to the company's announcement, the round attracted a diverse group of new and influential investors, underscoring significant interest in the application of AI to materials science.
Key new investors include:
- The UK government’s Sovereign AI Venture Fund
- Bezos Expeditions, the investment fund of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos
- Glade Brook Capital Partners
- Lux Capital
- AMD Ventures
- The Netherlands’ Invest-NL
Addressing the 'Materials Bottleneck'
AdCuspAI aims to solve what its co-founders, Chad Edwards and Max Welling, described as a "materials bottleneck" that constrains industrial progress. In a blog post, they stated, "the world needs materials that don’t yet exist" to advance sectors like semiconductors, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. The new capital will be used to expand operations across the U.S., Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
The company's AI platform, MIRA, is designed to manage the entire discovery process, from generative materials design and simulation to synthesis planning and experimental validation. The goal is to dramatically shorten the time and cost required to bring novel materials from concept to reality.
Industry Coalition and Leadership
Alongside the funding, CuspAI launched the AI Materials Foundry, a coalition of over 45 companies including chip designer Nvidia and social media firm Meta. The initiative aims to pool the significant computing resources required for developing new materials through AI.
To guide its expansion, the company has strengthened its leadership and advisory teams. CuspAI has hired former Apple and Google executive John Giannandrea to help establish its U.S. operations. Additionally, Advanced Micro Devices board member Abhi Talwalkar has joined an advisory board that already includes modern AI pioneers Yann LeCun and Geoffrey Hinton.
