Corning Beats Q3 Estimates, Lifts Outlook on Surging AI and Fiber Optic Demand

Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) posted third-quarter revenue and earnings that beat Wall Street estimates, driven by explosive growth in its Optical Communications division fueled by demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company also issued an upbeat forecast for the fourth quarter, sending its shares higher in pre-market trading.
Q3 Performance Exceeds Expectations
According to its earnings release, Corning's core sales for the third quarter reached $5.081 billion, a 19% increase year-over-year, surpassing the consensus estimate of approximately $5.02 billion. The company noted this represented the fastest growth since launching its "20-30-40 Springboard" strategic plan.
Core earnings per share (EPS) grew 36% year-over-year to $0.91, also topping analyst expectations of $0.89. On a GAAP basis, the company reported net sales of $4.855 billion and diluted EPS of $0.78, up 18% and 56% respectively from the prior-year period.
Optical Segment Leads as Other Divisions Show Mixed Results
The Optical Communications segment was the primary growth engine, with sales surging 44% year-over-year to $2.379 billion. This division now accounts for approximately 47% of the company's core sales. Corning highlighted exceptional strength within the segment, with enterprise network sales growing 84% and sales of products related to generative AI more than doubling. The company stated this growth outpaced the rate of GPU shipment increases.
Performance in other business segments was varied:
Ad- Glass Innovations: Sales declined 3% to $1.506 billion.
- Solar: While sales grew 37% to $436 million, the segment recorded a $7 million net loss due to a slower-than-anticipated capacity ramp-up.
- Automotive: Sales increased by 4%.
Corning also announced it secured four new multi-billion dollar, long-term customer agreements during the quarter, including multi-year deals with Verizon and AT&T, signaling future demand stability.
Strong Guidance and Margin Expansion
Profitability improved significantly in the quarter. Core gross margin rose by 150 basis points year-over-year to 40.5%, while core operating margin expanded by 310 basis points to 22.7%.
Looking ahead, Corning provided a strong fourth-quarter forecast. The company projects core sales to be between $5.2 billion and $5.3 billion and core EPS in the range of $0.96 to $1.00. Both figures are above prior market consensus, which anticipated sales of about $5.2 billion and EPS of $0.93. Following the release, the company's stock rose more than 6% in pre-market trading.
