BMO Lifts Price Targets on Paychex, Paycom Amid Positive Payroll Sector Outlook

BMO Capital Markets has increased its price targets on several software companies, including Paychex (PAYX) and Paycom (PAYC), citing a favorable outlook for the human capital management (HCM) and payroll sectors. The adjustments come as the firm reassesses the software space following second-quarter earnings reports.
Analyst Actions
In a note to clients, BMO detailed its revised 12-month price targets for key players in the payroll and information services industries. The firm's updated targets are:
- Paychex (PAYX): Raised to $118 from a previous $103.
- Paycom (PAYC): Raised to $235 from a previous $208.
- Wolters Kluwer (WLSNc): Raised to $82 from a previous $70.
BMO anticipates that Paychex's upcoming results will show moderate revenue upside and strong earnings, potentially leading to an increase in its full-year earnings growth guidance.
Sector Outlook and AI Impact
AdThe investment bank's positive view on HCM and payroll stocks is based on improving labor market conditions and what it describes as reasonable financial models. BMO analysts noted that payroll services tend to be "sticky," retaining customers even as new artificial intelligence tools disrupt other enterprise workflows.
This contrasts with the broader application and vertical software sectors, where most stocks have underperformed since the last earnings season. According to BMO, uncertainty persists around the medium-term growth durability for these companies as the influence of AI intensifies, particularly from new AI-native competitors in digital engineering and design.
BMO's Top Ideas
While raising targets on the payroll providers, BMO also highlighted other investment ideas. The firm's top-tier, Outperform-rated stocks include Samsara (IOT), PTC Inc. (PTC), and Paylocity (PCTY).
Among stocks rated Market Perform, BMO said it holds a more positive perspective on Autodesk (ADSK), ADP (ADP), and Bill.com (BILL) at their current valuations. The note suggests that while AI presents a challenge, established design companies like Autodesk and PTC possess a relative data advantage that could help them capitalize on AI-driven digital transformation over the long term.
