Bitcoin Tests Critical $80,000 Support Amid Bearish Chart Formation

Bitcoin's price is under considerable pressure, testing the critical $80,000 support level as sellers maintain control in the short term. The cryptocurrency is consolidating within a descending triangle pattern, a technical formation that often precedes a continuation of a downtrend, according to an analysis by Investing.com.
Technical Pressure Mounts
The descending triangle pattern, which the analysis notes is approximately 80% complete, is defined by a horizontal support line at $80,000 and a downward-sloping resistance line currently near $82,500. This pattern indicates that while buyers are defending the $80,000 mark, sellers are becoming progressively more aggressive at lower highs, squeezing the price into a tighter range.
A definitive breakout from this pattern is typically expected as it nears its apex. A sustained move below the $80,000 support would confirm the bearish pattern, while a break above the descending resistance would invalidate the immediate downward thesis.
Bearish Indicators Dominate
Several key technical indicators on the 5-hour chart underscore the current bearish sentiment. The analysis highlights that the primary risk is a structural breakdown below the key support zone.
Ad- Moving Averages: The price is trading below important moving averages, including the 200-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) at $82,542, which is often seen as a barometer for the longer-term trend on a given timeframe.
- Momentum: The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator shows the MACD line below its signal line, a sign of expanding bearish momentum.
- Ichimoku Cloud: Bitcoin's price is also positioned below the Ichimoku cloud, a versatile indicator that defines support and resistance. Trading below the cloud confirms a bearish trend.
Key Levels to Watch
Should the $80,000 support level fail to hold, the analysis identifies several potential downside targets based on Fibonacci retracement levels from the recent swing low of $62,280 to the high of $87,363. A breakdown could see the price target the 38.2% retracement level at approximately $77,781 and, subsequently, the 50% retracement level at $74,821.
Conversely, some indicators suggest a potential for a short-term bounce. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is approaching oversold territory, which could reduce immediate selling pressure. Furthermore, the price is nearing the lower Bollinger Band, a level that can sometimes act as dynamic support. For bulls to regain control, they would need to push the price decisively back above the resistance zone around $82,500.
