Bitcoin Surpasses $84,000 as Positive Wall Street Sentiment Lifts Crypto

Bitcoin's price rose more than 2% on Wednesday, extending recent gains as positive sentiment in traditional equity markets spilled over into digital assets. The world's largest cryptocurrency was trading at $84,792.2, a gain of 2.2%, by late afternoon trading in New York, according to data from Investing.com.
Market Dynamics
The rally in crypto markets tracked a strong performance on Wall Street, where upbeat corporate earnings and enthusiasm in the technology sector bolstered investor confidence. The move was particularly influenced by news from SpaceX, which reported strong quarterly results and confirmed it was exploring a potential merger with Tesla, reigniting interest in the artificial intelligence trade.
However, analysts noted that the rally in Bitcoin appeared to be driven more by price action than by a significant influx of new investment. "Bitcoin’s rise looks price-led and modest in size," said Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch. He pointed out that while the spot price rose about 2.6% over 24 hours, futures open interest increased by only 3%, suggesting "little fresh money came in."
Investor Positioning and Context
Data from the derivatives market suggests a cautious stance among traders despite the price increase. According to Kalchev, citing CoinDesk data, positioning remains light, with open interest well below its all-time highs. He also noted that key metrics indicate a lack of strong bullish conviction:
Ad- Implied volatility has fallen back below 40% after a brief spike.
- The one-month options skew on the Deribit exchange still leans toward puts, or bearish bets, at 8%.
- While the most-traded options were calls, they were primarily structured in complex multi-leg strategies rather than outright bullish wagers.
With a light U.S. economic calendar and the Federal Reserve in a pre-meeting blackout period, market participants are looking to equities and commodities for direction. A potential merger of SpaceX and Tesla would combine over 30,000 BTC on their balance sheets, valued at approximately $2.5 billion, Kalchev observed.
Broader Crypto Market
Other major cryptocurrencies also advanced, tracking Bitcoin's upward momentum. Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, gained 1.7% to trade at $2,499.79. Other notable gainers included:
- XRP: +3.9%
- Cardano (ADA): +2.3%
- Solana (SOL): +1.4%
- BNB: +1.2%
