Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 as Goldman Sachs Announces $2.25 Billion Crypto-Focused Acquisition

Bitcoin surged past the $80,000 mark, posting a weekly gain of 26% and helping drive the total market capitalization of digital assets to $2.8 trillion, a 21% increase over the past seven days, according to data cited by Woofun AI. The rally comes amid significant institutional moves, including a major acquisition by Goldman Sachs and positive analyst sentiment toward publicly traded crypto exchanges.
Market Rally Boosts Exchange Stocks
The rising spot prices for digital assets are seen by analysts as a catalyst for renewed interest from both retail and institutional investors, which could lead to a recovery in commission revenues for exchanges. Despite the price surge, overall trading volume has reportedly retraced nearly 75% from its recent highs.
Reflecting the positive sentiment, Goldman Sachs maintained its 'Buy' ratings for both Coinbase (COIN) and Robinhood (HOOD). In the past week, shares of the two companies have seen significant gains:
- Coinbase (COIN): Up over 21%
- Robinhood (HOOD): Up over 12%
Analyst James Yarrow also raised his price target for Coinbase from $173 to $196. The platforms are expanding their offerings, with Coinbase's derivatives unit reaching an annualized revenue of $100 million less than two months after its launch. Meanwhile, Bernstein analysts forecast that Robinhood's prediction markets could generate $586 million in revenue by the end of 2026.
AdGoldman Sachs Deepens Crypto Involvement
Goldman Sachs announced in August its agreement to acquire asset manager Neos Investments for up to $2.25 billion. Neos Investments manages over $30 billion in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that are based on Bitcoin and Ethereum options strategies, marking a significant step by the investment bank into the digital asset space.
In a separate development, Goldman's second-quarter 13F filing disclosed holdings of $86.5 million in spot Ripple (XRP) investment products. The investments were diversified across funds managed by Franklin Templeton, Bitwise, Canary Capital, 21Shares, and Grayscale. The filing did not specify whether the assets were held for clients or on behalf of the bank itself.
Regulatory and Business Context
The rebound in crypto-related equities is occurring as lawmakers in Washington discuss legislative proposals concerning the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's regulation of investment contracts. Deliberations are advancing on the CLARITY Act in the U.S. Senate, with a procedural vote on the bill scheduled for September 15, which could provide further regulatory clarity for the industry.
