Background

Bitcoin and other digital assets have rallied sharply, with the flagship cryptocurrency surging more than 20% over three days in its largest such gain since 2023. The rally, which extended a move from the prior week, was sparked by a shift in the macroeconomic outlook following a key announcement from the U.S. Treasury.

Market Reaction and Key Levels

On Monday, Bitcoin's price rose over 1%, approaching the $80,000 level for the first time since May, according to data from Investing.com. The broader crypto market followed, with Ethereum climbing 2% to approximately $2,470, near its January highs.

Crypto-related equities also gained ground. MicroStrategy (MSTR) rose 2%, while other companies with significant crypto holdings, such as Bitmine and Sharplink, saw gains of 5% and 4% respectively, as reported by Zhitong Finance.

Macro Catalyst and Short Squeeze

The rally's primary catalyst was a U.S. Treasury announcement last week that it would increase its purchases of long-term government bonds. This move briefly pushed down bond yields, increasing the appeal of risk assets like cryptocurrencies and scarce assets like gold amid rising concerns over inflation and fiscal deficits.

The rapid price appreciation also triggered a significant short squeeze. As prices climbed, more than $4 billion in bearish crypto positions were liquidated, further fueling the upward momentum.

Institutional Flows and Analyst View

Renewed institutional interest has provided further support for the market. Last week, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $1.92 billion, the largest single-week inflow since October of the previous year, a period that coincided with a cyclical top for the asset.

Analysts are now watching to see if the rally can be sustained. Jonathan Krinsky of BTIG noted in a Monday report that a similar 20% three-day surge in January 2023 broke a downtrend line but eventually faded. The market also took note of comments from Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio, who warned of potential debt crises and suggested investors consider a "moderate allocation" to Bitcoin, lending additional support to the bullish sentiment.
