Background

Bitcoin traded near $81,500 on Friday, struggling to sustain upward momentum as conflicting on-chain data and significant whale transfers created an uncertain outlook for the leading cryptocurrency. The price action keeps the psychologically important $80,000 support level in focus for traders after a recovery attempt toward $87,333 faltered.

On-Chain Metrics Offer Contradictory Clues

Recent on-chain activity presents a mixed picture regarding potential selling pressure. According to data from CryptoQuant, Bitcoin holders who acquired their coins six to twelve months ago have significantly reduced the proportion of transfers sent to exchanges, from 40.4% in June to just 4.4% by October 15. This can suggest a lower immediate intent to sell.

However, the same cohort of holders increased their total 30-day transfer volume to 205,400 BTC from 157,700 BTC, indicating that while fewer coins are heading to exchanges, substantial volumes are still being moved. Separately, CoinGlass data showed positive spot exchange netflows of $18.65 million, suggesting that deposits exceeded withdrawals and potentially increased the supply available for selling.

Whale Activity Adds to Uncertainty

Blockchain tracking service Whale Alert recently identified two large transactions totaling approximately $307 million, further complicating the market picture. The transactions included:

  • A transfer of 2,878 BTC between two unidentified wallets.
  • A withdrawal of 888 BTC from the Kraken exchange.

While withdrawals from exchanges are often viewed as a bullish signal that reduces immediately sellable supply, the overall purpose of these large-scale movements remains unclear.

Broader Market and Institutional Trends

Bitcoin was trading at $81,689.0 as of 02:29 ET (06:29 GMT), per Investing.com data. The broader cryptocurrency market saw minor declines, with Ether (ETH) falling 0.81% to $2,413.50 and XRP dropping 0.82% to $1.2994.

Despite the choppy short-term price action, institutional interest in the underlying technology continues to grow. Major financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, and Morgan Stanley, are reportedly exploring business opportunities in asset tokenization and the use of blockchain for cross-border payments.
