Bitcoin Slips Below $80,000 as Rate Hike Fears and Oil Surge Weigh on Sentiment

Summary
The leading cryptocurrency faced downward pressure after a strong U.S. jobs report increased the likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate hike, while rising geopolitical tensions pushed oil prices higher.
Bitcoin fell below the $80,000 threshold on Monday as a combination of macroeconomic pressures and geopolitical uncertainty dampened investor appetite for risk assets. The cryptocurrency traded at $79,381.99, a decline of approximately 0.5% for the day, according to data from Investing.com.
Macro Headwinds Intensify
The downturn follows a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs report on Friday, which has reignited speculation of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month. The report showed the U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, nearly triple what economists had forecast, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. Following the release, the market-implied probability of a rate hike at the Fed's September 15-16 meeting jumped from 49% to approximately 60%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
Higher interest rates typically create headwinds for non-yielding assets like Bitcoin by increasing the opportunity cost of holding them and tightening overall financial conditions. Compounding the risk-off sentiment, surging oil prices introduced further uncertainty. Brent crude oil climbed to around $97 a barrel on Monday amid military tensions between the U.S. and Iran, stoking fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East.
Investors are now looking ahead to key U.S. inflation data for further clues on the Fed's policy path. The Producer Price Index (PPI) is scheduled for release on Thursday, followed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Friday. Higher-than-expected inflation figures could reinforce expectations for tighter monetary policy.
AdSecurity Breach and Market Snapshot
Adding to market jitters, a significant security breach has raised renewed concerns about the safety of digital asset infrastructure. The Liquid Network, a settlement platform for crypto exchanges, suspended new transactions after approximately $320 million worth of Bitcoin was stolen from its federated wallet. The network reported on X that roughly 4,000 of its 4,200 BTC were transferred by an entity claiming to be a "so-called white-hat hacker."
Despite the recent price correction and security news, institutional demand has provided some support. Last week, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of about $1 billion, according to data from SoSoValue. The broader altcoin market was mixed on Monday, with Ethereum rising 0.2% to $2,499.78, while XRP fell 0.79% and Solana declined 1.1%.
