Bitcoin Slips Below $78,300 as Geopolitical Tensions, Rising Yields Weigh on Markets

Bitcoin's price fell on Thursday, dipping amid a broader risk-off sentiment in financial markets driven by rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and surging U.S. Treasury yields. The world's largest cryptocurrency declined 0.8% to trade at $78,299.6, according to early trading data.
Geopolitical and Macroeconomic Headwinds
Investor sentiment soured following reports of an escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran. According to reports, Iran struck 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a U.S. retaliation that sank five Iranian oil tankers. The conflict pushed Brent crude oil prices above the $100 a barrel mark.
Elevated energy prices are fueling concerns about persistent, energy-driven inflation. This raises the possibility that the Federal Reserve may maintain a more hawkish monetary policy stance, which typically weighs on assets that are sensitive to interest rate changes.
Impact on Yields and Risk Assets
The macroeconomic environment further pressured cryptocurrencies as U.S. Treasury yields climbed, with the 10-year yield hitting a three-year high. The rise in yields followed a U.S. Treasury Department announcement of a larger-than-expected buyback of longer-dated bonds that failed to calm the market.
AdHigher interest rates and bond yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. Historically, speculative and liquidity-dependent assets, including cryptocurrencies, have underperformed during periods of rising interest rates.
Broader Crypto Market Declines
The downturn was not isolated to Bitcoin, with most major altcoins also trading in the red. The broader market movement indicates a widespread retreat from risk.
- Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 0.7% to $2,478.32.
- XRP slid 2.7%.
- Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) each declined by over 2%.
- BNB experienced a larger drop of 3.9%.
