Bitcoin Slips Below $77,200 as Geopolitical Tensions and Inflation Data Weigh on Markets

Bitcoin's price declined on Friday, snapping a three-week winning streak as investors moved away from riskier assets. The leading cryptocurrency fell amid escalating military tensions between the U.S. and Iran and ahead of a pivotal U.S. inflation report.
By 01:51 ET (05:51 GMT), Bitcoin had fallen 1.7% to $77,197.6, according to Investing.com data. The token was also down 3% for the week, ending a period of sustained gains.
Geopolitical Pressures Drive Risk-Off Sentiment
The downturn in crypto markets coincided with a broader risk-off move as investors reacted to worsening U.S.-Iran military tensions, which included attacks on shipping this week. These concerns contributed to a surge in oil prices, which jumped over 11% for the week, fueling fears of higher energy-driven inflation.
A potential rise in inflation could compel major central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, to pursue further interest rate hikes. This prospect typically dampens enthusiasm for growth-sensitive assets like cryptocurrencies.
Inflation Data and Fed Policy in Focus
AdMarket participants are also cautiously awaiting the release of the U.S. consumer price index (CPI) on Friday. The report is expected to show that inflation held steady in August, but any upside surprise could reinforce expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike at its meeting next week.
These expectations were already bolstered by U.S. producer price index (PPI) data released earlier in the week, which indicated persistent inflationary pressures. A spike in U.S. Treasury yields this week also added significant pressure on the crypto sector.
Broader Crypto Market Retreats
The negative sentiment was not confined to Bitcoin, as most major alternative cryptocurrencies also posted losses. The broader market retreat reflects widespread profit-taking after a strong performance in early September.
- Ether (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency, fell 0.5% to $2,468.17.
- XRP declined by 2.7%.
- Solana (SOL) and Cardano (ADA) were each down over 2%.
- BNB registered a smaller loss of 0.7%.
