Bitcoin Holds Above $81,000 Amid Volatile Spot ETF Flows

Bitcoin was trading above the $81,000 mark on Saturday, demonstrating resilience after a volatile week marked by fluctuating demand from U.S. spot exchange-traded funds. The cryptocurrency's price action reflects investor uncertainty as they weigh mixed institutional signals against a challenging macroeconomic backdrop.
As of 15:00 ET (19:00 GMT), Bitcoin was priced at $81,544.8, a modest gain of 0.6% on the day, according to Investing.com. The week saw the asset reach a high above $84,000 before briefly dipping below $80,000, a level investors are closely watching as a key psychological and technical support.
ETF Flows Signal Investor Indecision
The primary driver of recent volatility has been the erratic flow of funds into and out of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. These investment vehicles, viewed as a barometer for institutional appetite, have recorded significant movements in both directions.
According to data from Coinfomania, the funds experienced a volatile week:
- Oct. 16: $82.39 million in net outflows, with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) accounting for $71.78 million of the withdrawals.
- Oct. 14: Approximately $261.4 million in total withdrawals.
- Oct. 13: A reversal saw $175.7 million in net inflows, led by Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund ($103.1 million) and IBIT ($65.9 million).
- Oct. 12: $65.4 million in net withdrawals, attributed entirely to IBIT.
AdThese sharp reversals highlight a lack of firm conviction from institutional investors. Ethereum-based investment products also faced headwinds, recording $69.68 million in outflows on October 16.
Broader Market Context
The choppy price action for digital assets comes as investors also contend with stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data, which has fueled expectations of further interest rate increases by the Federal Reserve. In the broader crypto market, most major altcoins posted slight gains, with Ether rising 0.5% to $2,417.92.
Separately, stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group disclosed it generated approximately $1.4 billion in revenue during the first half of 2026. The company reported that its USDC stablecoin processed over $36 trillion in on-chain transactions and represented about 77% of global stablecoin volume in June.
