Bitcoin Holds Above $79,000 as Investors Weigh Fed Policy and Regulatory Headwinds

Bitcoin edged higher on Thursday, holding its ground below recent peaks as a broader crypto market rally cooled. Investors are now assessing persistent inflation in the U.S., potential regulatory actions, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East for further direction.
As of 9:56 AM ET, the world's largest cryptocurrency was trading up 1.2% at $79,403.2, according to Investing.com data. The move follows a climb to as high as $82,000 earlier in the week, driven in part by a "currency debasement trade" where U.S. Treasury intervention in bond markets pushed capital toward alternative assets.
Market Awaits Cues on Fed Policy and Regulation
Market reaction was muted to the latest U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index data, which showed inflation holding steady. However, the PCE index, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, remains well above the central bank's 2% annual target, sustaining concerns of a hawkish monetary policy stance. Higher interest rates can reduce the appeal of speculative assets, and market participants are now looking toward the Fed's September meeting for clarity.
Adding to the cautious sentiment is regulatory uncertainty in the United States. Following President Donald Trump's call for stricter crypto oversight last week, the market remains on edge. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reportedly preparing to introduce more regulations for crypto custody services, according to a report by Coindesk. This uncertainty is compounded by the stalled progress of the Clarity Act, a bill aimed at creating a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, in Congress.
Geopolitical and Competitive Pressures
AdGeopolitical factors are also in focus, with investors cautiously monitoring mixed signals regarding the U.S.-Iran conflict. While an agreement between Iran and Oman on commercial shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz caused a sharp drop in oil prices, providing some relief for inflation prospects, the market remains wary of a potential price rebound if tensions flare up again.
Meanwhile, strong earnings and guidance from artificial intelligence giant Nvidia could see capital rotate back into AI-related equities and away from cryptocurrencies, a trend observed for much of the year.
Altcoin Market Sees Mixed Performance
As the broader crypto rally paused, most major altcoins saw more modest movements on Thursday. Key performers included:
- Ether (ETH): Up 1.5% to $2,493.88
- Solana (SOL): A notable gainer, rising 9.6%
- XRP: Increased by approximately 3%
- Cardano (ADA): Up 1.8%
