Billions in FX Options Set to Expire, Potentially Influencing EUR/USD and USD/JPY

Several major currency pairs face significant options expiries on Tuesday, which could introduce volatility and anchor spot prices around key levels ahead of the 10 a.m. ET New York cut. The expiries, detailed in data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), are concentrated in the euro, U.S. dollar, and Japanese yen pairs.
Key Expirations by Currency Pair
The largest notional values are concentrated in a few key pairs, with traders closely watching specific strike prices.
- EUR/USD: The most notable expiries include €2.23 billion at the 1.1400 strike, €1.63 billion at 1.1500, and €1.24 billion at 1.1485.
- USD/JPY: A substantial $3.18 billion is set to expire at the 163.45 strike. Smaller, yet still significant, amounts include $934.1 million at 160.00 and $679.3 million at 162.00.
- AUD/USD: The Australian dollar has a large expiry of A$1.5 billion at the 0.6925 strike price.
- Other Pairs: Notable expiries also include USD/CAD with $611 million at 1.4125, USD/CNY with $547 million at 6.8200, and USD/BRL with $358 million at 5.1000.
According to the DTCC data, no large options strikes are scheduled to expire on Tuesday for GBP/USD, NZD/USD, USD/KRW, EUR/GBP, or USD/MXN.
Market Implications
AdLarge options expiries can act as a short-term magnet for a currency's spot price, a phenomenon known as "pinning." As the expiry time approaches, the price may be drawn toward strike levels with high open interest, as options sellers may hedge their positions to protect against losses. This can temporarily suppress volatility.
Once the options expire, this gravitational pull is removed, which can release pent-up price pressure and lead to sharper moves. Forex traders often monitor these levels as potential areas of support or resistance in the spot market.
Looking Ahead This Week
The market will also contend with further significant expiries later in the week. Upcoming notable strikes include:
- EUR/USD: €2.76 billion at 1.1400 on Wednesday and €2.05 billion at 1.1630 on Thursday.
- USD/JPY: $1.43 billion at 157.50 on Wednesday and $1.77 billion at 162.00 on Friday.
- AUD/USD: A$1.19 billion at 0.6900 on Wednesday and A$1.22 billion at 0.7080 on Friday.
