Barclays Raises S&P 500 Target to 7,950 on Robust Tech Earnings

Barclays has increased its year-end 2026 price target for the S&P 500, citing a powerful second-quarter earnings season driven by sustained strength in the technology sector. In a note to clients, the bank's strategists raised their forecast for the benchmark index to 7,950 from a previous target of 7,800.
Earnings Fuel Higher Forecast
The revision is underpinned by a significant upgrade to corporate profit expectations. Barclays lifted its fiscal 2026 earnings-per-share (EPS) estimate for the S&P 500 to $365 from $337 and its fiscal 2027 estimate to $414 from $389. The firm's 2027 price target remains unchanged at 8,800.
This optimistic outlook follows a second quarter where S&P 500 headline EPS grew more than 50% year-over-year, according to the bank. Key figures from the report include:
- Sales Growth: 13.3% year-over-year for the S&P 500 in Q2.
- Earnings Beats: 86.2% of companies surpassed consensus EPS estimates, well above the long-term median of 75% since 1998.
Strategists led by Venu Krishna wrote that their valuation assumptions remain "deliberately conservative," and that "earnings do most of the heavy lifting in our target increase."
Tech Sector Leads the Charge
AdThe technology sector was the primary engine of the strong earnings season. Big Tech companies posted 35% EPS growth, while the rest of the technology sector saw profits surge by 88%, Barclays reported. Alphabet and Amazon were noted as the main drivers of the upside surprise, while Meta missed expectations.
Looking ahead, the bank projects that capital expenditures by hyperscale cloud providers will exceed $1.1 trillion in 2027, a 67% year-over-year increase. This spending is expected to continue fueling growth in the tech ecosystem.
Market Caution and Sector Shifts
Despite the strong earnings beats, the market's reaction has been muted. The strategists observed that "markets still penalized misses much more heavily than they rewarded beats this quarter," suggesting a high hurdle rate for stocks amid elevated bond yields.
Barclays also adjusted its sector ratings. The firm downgraded the Utilities sector to Neutral from Positive, citing regulatory challenges such as the "failure to advance meaningful wildfire liability reform in California" and "bipartisan pushback against data center permitting in several U.S. states." The bank remains Positive on Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) and Industrials, while maintaining a Negative view on the Consumer complex.
