Background

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 launch event on September 9 could act as a negative catalyst for its shares, as investor focus shifts to pricing and the potential impact of higher costs on consumer demand and profit margins, according to a research note from KeyBanc Capital Markets.

The Pricing Dilemma

Analysts at KeyBanc outlined a critical challenge for the technology giant. Apple could either raise prices broadly to protect its gross margins, a move the firm warns could trigger “sticker shock” and depress unit sales, or it could raise prices more selectively, which would likely lead to greater scrutiny of its profitability.

This difficult choice comes as the firm expects a product lineup heavily skewed toward premium models. KeyBanc maintained its Underweight rating on Apple stock with a price target of $250 per share.

New Models and Forecasts

KeyBanc anticipates the unveiling of three new flagship phones: the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a first-generation foldable model it calls the Fold/Ultra. The note suggests the absence of a standard, non-pro iPhone 18 model will be a key factor in its sales forecasts.

The brokerage's model includes several key projections:

Sample IUX Markets – In-articleAd
  • Pricing: A $150 price increase for the iPhone 18 Pro to $1,249, a $200 increase for the Pro Max to $1,399, and a $2,199 price for the new foldable device.
  • Production: Total iPhone 18 builds are forecast at approximately 80 million units in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 and the first quarter of fiscal 2027, a decline from roughly 91 million units in the prior-year period.

KeyBanc stated that higher average selling prices from a richer product mix are expected to partially offset the lower shipment volumes.

Historical Context for Investors

Historically, Apple shares have tended to underperform around new product announcements, according to KeyBanc's analysis. Over the past five years, the stock has seen an average decline of 0.72% on the day of the iPhone launch event.

Furthermore, the weakness has often extended in the immediate aftermath. The analysis found that five trading days after the announcement, Apple's stock has declined by an average of 1.22% over the same five-year period.
