Background

U.S. corporate earnings season intensifies this week, with highly anticipated reports from Alphabet and Intel set to provide a critical test for the market's artificial intelligence-driven rally. Investors will be closely watching for updates on AI capital spending, which has been a primary catalyst for stocks this year, against a backdrop of lofty profit expectations.

Spotlight on AI Spending

Alphabet's quarterly report on Wednesday will be a focal point for Wall Street. As one of the heavyweight "Magnificent Seven" stocks and the third-largest U.S. company by market value at $4.2 trillion, its performance can significantly sway market indexes. More importantly, the Google parent is a key AI "hyperscaler," investing billions in data centers and infrastructure.

This capital spending has fueled massive gains for semiconductor makers and other related technology firms. "If Alphabet announces any type of pullbacks with respect to the spending that they’re forecasting around AI, you could see ripple effects across the entire AI ecosystem," said Kevin Mahn, chief investment officer at Hennion & Walsh Asset Management, in a comment to Reuters.

Semiconductor Rally Under Scrutiny

Results from chipmakers Intel and Texas Instruments will also be under the microscope following a period of extreme volatility. While the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index remains up more than 60% in 2026, it recently entered a bear market, falling over 20% from its late-June record high.

Expectations for the sector are exceptionally high, with Intel shares having soared over 160% this year. The market has already shown signs of fatigue, with tepid reactions to strong results from industry peers Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor. Michael Arone, chief investment strategist at State Street Investment Management, noted that leveraged products tied to the sector are "amplifying on both the upside and the downside."

Broader Market Context

Overall, corporate profits are expected to show significant strength. S&P 500 earnings are projected to have increased by a robust 26% in the second quarter, according to LSEG IBES data. More than 80 S&P 500 companies are scheduled to report in the coming week, including Tesla, American Express, and RTX.

Investors also remain watchful of macroeconomic factors, including geopolitical tensions and the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy meeting at the end of July. While recent cooler-than-expected inflation data has eased some concerns, the market is looking for corporate fundamentals to continue justifying this year's gains. "The fundamentals have been resilient, and the earnings continue to be outstanding," Arone added.
