AeroVironment Stock Rises on Raymond James Upgrade to Outperform

Summary
Shares of the drone and missile systems maker gained after Raymond James upgraded the stock to Outperform with a $210 price target, citing a more favorable risk/reward outlook and major new contract potential.
Shares of AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV) rose approximately 2% on Thursday after analysts at Raymond James upgraded the stock to Outperform from Market Perform. The firm initiated a price target of $210 per share, signaling renewed confidence in the unmanned aircraft systems manufacturer.
Analyst's Rationale
The upgrade is based on what Raymond James analyst Brian Gesuale described as improved risk/reward dynamics. In a note to clients, the analyst pointed to a 55% decline in AeroVironment's stock price since March and a material reset in forward EBITDA estimates, which have fallen by about 15% in the last six months.
These factors have significantly de-risked investor expectations, according to the firm. "With bookings beginning to inflect, backlog positioned to resume growth, and consensus expectations now significantly de-risked, we believe the risk/reward has turned decisively positive," Gesuale wrote. The note also suggested that market concerns surrounding the company's SCAR program are now largely in the past.
AdKey Growth Catalysts
Raymond James highlighted several potential growth drivers, including significant new government contracts. The firm noted that the U.S. Army is currently negotiating the Enduring High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program with AeroVironment, an opportunity estimated to be worth approximately $500 million.
This potential contract, along with the recently awarded Domestic Shield IDIQ of a similar scale, is seen as cementing AeroVironment's position as a leader in the counter-UAS and Directed Energy market. The analyst also cited growing traction from newer platforms like the P550 and Red Dragon, as well as expanding international demand, as further positive indicators.
