Zumiez Shares Plunge After Q2 Miss and Bleak Q3 Forecast

Shares of Zumiez Inc. (ZUMZ) tumbled more than 16% in after-hours trading after the specialty retailer reported disappointing fiscal second-quarter results and provided a third-quarter outlook that fell far short of analyst forecasts, signaling persistent weakness in consumer demand.
Disappointing Q2 Performance
For the quarter ended August 1, 2026, Zumiez posted results that missed Wall Street estimates on both the top and bottom lines. The company's performance included:
- Net Loss: A net loss of $0.17 per share, which was wider than the consensus estimate of a loss between $0.11 and $0.14 per share.
- Net Sales: Revenue declined 2.5% year-over-year to $209 million, missing the consensus forecast of approximately $213 million.
- Comparable Sales: A key metric of retail health, comparable-store sales, fell by 2.1%, pointing to reduced traffic and spending at its locations.
Weak Outlook Amplifies Sell-Off
The forward guidance issued by management for the crucial third quarter appeared to be the primary driver of the stock's sharp decline. Zumiez projected third-quarter earnings per share of just $0.00 to $0.10, a fraction of the $0.59 per share that analysts had modeled.
AdRevenue guidance also came in well below expectations. The company forecast third-quarter sales in the range of $222 million to $226 million, compared to a Wall Street consensus of around $238 million. Compounding the negative outlook, Zumiez disclosed that quarter-to-date sales were already running 4.3% below the same period last year and that it plans to close approximately 16 stores in fiscal 2026.
Market Reaction and Context
The sell-off was specific to the company's poor performance, as the broader U.S. stock market, including the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, was largely flat for the day. The weak report and guidance confirmed an already cautious stance from the analyst community, which held an average rating of "Reduce" on the stock heading into the earnings release.
Following the after-hours plunge, Zumiez stock is now trading near its 52-week low and is down more than 55% from its 52-week high of $31.70. The combination of a current sales slowdown and a deeply pessimistic forecast suggests management does not anticipate a near-term recovery.
