Yaskawa Electric Shares Plunge After IT Overhaul Hits Quarterly Profit

Shares of Yaskawa Electric Corp. (TSE:6506) plunged on Monday after the Japanese robotics and motion-control manufacturer reported a sharp decline in quarterly profit, as major disruptions from an IT systems overhaul overshadowed a double-digit increase in revenue. The company's stock fell 14.3% to ¥5,972, making it one of the worst performers on the Nikkei 225 index.
Earnings Detail Profit-Revenue Divergence
In its first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings report, which covers the March-to-May 2026 period, Yaskawa disclosed a significant divergence between its top and bottom lines. While revenue grew, profitability contracted sharply compared to the previous year.
Key figures from the July 10 release include:
- Operating profit: Approximately ¥8.5 billion, a decline of roughly 19% year-over-year.
- Net profit: A slide of 23% compared to the same period last year.
- Revenue: An increase of more than 10% year-over-year.
Systems Migration Blamed for Disruption
AdThe primary cause for the profit decline was a larger-than-anticipated disruption from an ongoing migration of the company's core ERP and IT systems, according to the company. The bottom line was also impacted by business restructuring costs in Europe.
Management acknowledged the systems transition had a more severe impact than its April estimates but noted that production is gradually recovering. Yaskawa expects operations to normalize during the current June-to-August quarter. Despite the quarterly setback, the company maintained its full-year earnings guidance, signaling confidence in its ability to recover from the near-term issues.
Market Reaction and Broader Impact
Investors reacted sharply to the earnings miss, focusing on the immediate operational challenges rather than the stable full-year outlook. The negative sentiment spread to other factory automation peers, with shares of Fanuc Corp. and Omron Corp. also facing selling pressure.
As a key industrial manufacturer and a component of the Nikkei 225, Yaskawa's performance is closely watched as a bellwether for global automation demand and industrial capital spending. The broader Nikkei 225 index slid 1.1% during the session.
