Background

Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p) shares fell 1.4% to €71.94 in recent trading after the German automaker announced second-quarter results that fell significantly short of analyst expectations and issued a sharply negative revision to its full-year revenue guidance.

Second-Quarter Results Disappoint

The company reported a net profit of €1.54 billion for the April-to-June period, a decrease of approximately one-third compared to the same period a year earlier. Operating profit also declined by about 10% to €3.47 billion, well below the analyst consensus of around €3.95 billion.

Volkswagen's results were impacted by several factors, including a €500 million charge related to the halt of its electric ID.4 model production in the United States. The company also cited negative mix effects, indicating a higher proportion of sales from lower-margin vehicles during the quarter.

Full-Year Outlook Reversed

Compounding the weak earnings, Volkswagen reversed its financial outlook for 2026, a move that surprised investors. The automaker now expects full-year revenue to decline by as much as 3%. This stands in stark contrast to its previous forecast, which had projected growth of up to 3%.

This reversal signals significant headwinds for the company, pushing its preference shares toward the lower end of their recent trading range and not far above the 52-week low of €69.20.

Mounting Strategic Pressures

The earnings report intensified existing concerns over the company's strategic direction and cost competitiveness. Volkswagen confirmed it is considering up to 100,000 job cuts globally as part of a major restructuring effort, a figure that is double what was previously disclosed.

Performance in China, the group's largest single market, remains a major challenge. Vehicle deliveries in the country plunged by more than a third in the second quarter, highlighting the intense competitive pressure from domestic Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
