US Stocks Close Lower as Tech and Consumer Sectors Drag on Major Indices

Summary
U.S. equities fell on Friday, with the Nasdaq Composite posting the steepest losses as technology and consumer stocks came under pressure. The Dow and S&P 500 also ended the session in negative territory amid a significant rise in market volatility.
U.S. stock markets ended the week on a downturn, with all three major indices closing lower on Friday. The decline was led by the technology sector, pushing the Nasdaq Composite to the session's largest loss.
Broad-Based Sell-Off
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.77%, while the S&P 500 lost 1.01%. The tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite saw the most significant decline, dropping 1.40% by the close of trading. Losses were driven by weakness in the Consumer Goods, Consumer Services, and Technology sectors, according to Investing.com data.
Investor sentiment soured, as reflected by a sharp increase in the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often referred to as the market's "fear gauge." The VIX surged 12.01% to finish at 18.74. Market breadth was negative, with falling stocks outnumbering advancers by a significant margin on both the NYSE and Nasdaq exchanges.
