Market sentiment appeared positive, with advancing stocks outnumbering decliners on both major exchanges. On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,560 stocks rose compared to 1,169 that fell. The positive breadth was similar on the Nasdaq, where 2,091 stocks gained and 1,317 declined.
Reflecting the calmer mood among investors, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), often referred to as the market's "fear gauge," dropped significantly by 8.58% to settle at 17.05.
Sector and Stock Movers
Gains were led by the Technology, Oil & Gas, and Basic Materials sectors. Within the Dow, industrial conglomerate 3M Company (MMM) was the top performer, surging 7.32%. UnitedHealth Group (UNH) also posted a strong gain of 3.51%, reaching a new 52-week high.
AdOther notable movers on the S&P 500 included several semiconductor and data storage companies:

Commodities and Currencies
In the commodities market, energy prices moved higher. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures for September delivery rose 2.50% to $84.51 a barrel. Gold futures for August delivery also advanced, gaining 1.65% to $4,082.20 a troy ounce.
The U.S. Dollar Index Futures, which measures the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, edged up 0.23% to 101.01.
