US Senators Reassure Allies on Defense Demand, Push Against Aerospace Tariffs

Summary
A bipartisan group of U.S. senators at the Farnborough airshow signaled strong and growing American demand for defense products while urging the administration to maintain tariff-free trade in the aerospace sector.
A bipartisan delegation of nine U.S. senators attended the Farnborough airshow in England on Monday to reassure international defense contractors of sustained U.S. demand and to advocate against potential tariffs on aerospace products.
A Message of Strong Demand
The senators' primary message was to encourage allied partners to increase their production capabilities to meet growing U.S. defense needs. "Our message is encouragement to them to increase their capabilities to send the message that the demand signal is for real," said Republican Senator Jerry Moran, according to Reuters. He added that congressional actions suggest this demand is poised to grow.
Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen emphasized the strategic importance of the large U.S. presence at the event. "The fact that we have such a large presence is important not just to America’s industry but also to the partnerships that we need to have around the world to not only improve our economic security but our national security," Shaheen stated.
Opposition to Tariffs
The delegation also voiced its opposition to imposing tariffs on the aerospace industry, a key point of concern for global supply chains. Their visit follows a recent U.S. Commerce Department investigation which concluded that imported commercial aircraft and parts raise national security concerns, though the Trump administration is not immediately pursuing new tariffs.
AdAfter heavy lobbying from the aviation sector, the administration previously agreed to exempt aircraft and parts from tariffs. The senators' presence underscores a continued push to maintain the tariff-free environment that has governed the sector for decades.
Economic Context
The U.S. aerospace and defense industry is a significant contributor to the nation's economy and trade balance. According to Eric Fanning, CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association, the sector has seen substantial growth and holds a dominant global position.
Key industry figures include:
- A 25% increase in exports over the last year.
- An employment base of more than 2 million U.S. workers.
- A $75 billion annual trade surplus for the U.S. sector, largely under the 1979 Civil Aircraft Agreement which established a tariff-free regime.
