US Equity Funds See $7.3 Billion Outflow as Investors Brace for Big Tech Earnings

U.S. equity funds recorded a second consecutive week of net withdrawals as investor caution intensified ahead of crucial earnings reports from several technology bellwethers. For the week ending July 22, investors pulled a net $7.34 billion from U.S. equity funds, a significant increase from the $4.18 billion withdrawn the prior week, according to data from LSEG Lipper.
Shifting Equity Allocations
The outflows were driven primarily by a retreat from growth-oriented stocks. U.S. growth funds experienced their largest weekly outflow in three weeks, totaling $8.55 billion. At the same time, value funds saw $1.39 billion in net withdrawals, ending a three-week streak of inflows.
Despite the broad retreat, investors continued to allocate capital to specific sectors for the fourth straight week, with these funds attracting a combined $2.46 billion. Key areas of interest included:
- Financials: +$1.39 billion
- Healthcare: +$1.35 billion
- Technology: +$1.17 billion
Tech Earnings Fuel Uncertainty
AdThe cautious sentiment follows disappointing earnings reports from Alphabet and Tesla earlier in the week. According to the source, these results highlighted investor concerns about the rising costs of artificial intelligence investments, the durability of growth, and corporate cash burn. Markets are now closely watching for results from Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms, which are scheduled to report next week.
Broader Asset Class Movements
The risk-off tone extended to the bond market, where U.S. bond funds registered $2.36 billion in outflows, snapping a 13-week run of net inflows. The reversal was led by short-to-intermediate investment-grade funds, which posted their first weekly outflow since April 15, totaling $7.29 billion. In contrast, government and Treasury funds saw inflows of $1.32 billion, suggesting a flight to safety within fixed income.
Meanwhile, U.S. money market funds, often viewed as a proxy for cash holdings, saw net outflows of $25.17 billion. This followed an even larger withdrawal of approximately $67.16 billion in the preceding week.
