Background

Shares of UPM-Kymmene plunged more than 7% after the Finnish forest products company reported third-quarter financial results that fell significantly short of market expectations and issued a cautious outlook for the second half of the year.

Earnings Miss and Cautious Guidance

UPM announced a third-quarter comparable EBIT of €131 million, a sharp miss compared to the analyst consensus estimate of €204.4 million. The company attributed the weak performance to lower deliveries caused by customer destocking and an increase in variable costs. Sales from continuing operations were reported at €2,202 million for the quarter.

Adding to investor concerns, UPM provided a disappointing forecast for the remainder of 2026. The company guided for a second-half comparable EBIT from continuing operations in the range of €375 million to €575 million. The midpoint of this range, €475 million, represents a slight decline compared to the prior-year period.

Several factors contributed to the stock's sharp decline. The negative reaction was amplified by technical and operational headwinds facing the company.

  • Ex-Dividend Date: The stock's ex-dividend date is October 29, for a €1.50 per share distribution. This upcoming payment creates a mechanical downward price adjustment.
  • Operational Challenges: UPM highlighted a difficult operating environment, noting that it had curtailed production at its Kaukas pulp mill in Finland for eight weeks due to challenging conditions in the softwood pulp market.
  • Analyst Sentiment: The stock entered the earnings season with limited institutional support, following a downgrade to "underweight" by Barclays in August, which cited pressure on pulp prices from new market capacity.

Market Reaction

In response to the combination of negative factors, UPM-Kymmene shares were trading down 7.1% at €22.78, approaching the low end of their 52-week range of €22.12. The broader market provided no cushion, as Finland's benchmark OMX Helsinki 25 index was also under pressure during the session.
